Being the stream of the universe,

Ever true and unswerving,

Become as a little child once more.

Tao flows like a river nourishing all that it touches. The Tai Chi person must become that river nourishing all with love and unswerving in following the principles of Tao. You must take the Mother Tao's hand and follow Her as a small child. When the little three year old boy is sitting on the floor playing with his toys, and mother comes to him saying, "Come on! We have to go!", the little boy has no idea where they are going. He stands up and takes the mother's hand. He does not care where they are going as long as he is with mother. The Tai Chi man must see the hand of Mother Tao and, completely trusting, take that hand allowing Her to take him where She will. Maybe she is taking him to Avalon, but maybe not. I have seen pictures of naked Jewish women being led into the gas chambers of Auschwitz. One was holding the hand of her little naked boy. If you had tried to pull that little boy away from his mother, he would have screamed and fought. He does not know where mother is going but he wants to be with her wherever it is. This is the Tai Chi man. I take the Mother's hand and I do not care if she is taking me to Avalon or Auschwitz just as long as I can be with Her.

The three symbols of Taoism and Tai Chi are the river, the woman, and the child. The child has no preconceived plans, but simply acts as he feels. This spontaneity of feeling and behavior keeps life interesting to the child. Everything and everyone he meets is unique, fresh, and new. We adults have already categorized everything. If you see a rock, you see it as like all other rocks. It is hard and does not do much. You have seen thousands of rocks and they are pretty much the same to you. But your son can pick up a rock and carry it all the way back home as you walk through the forest, just for the feel of its weight and the smoothness of the surface. He experiences the uniqueness of this particular rock and becomes one with it. An interesting thing, this rock.

But it is not just the rock that is interesting to your son. He is fascinated with everything he comes into contact with: a bottle cap, a worm, a dead frog, a button. While you walk along, you are in your rational mind thinking about this or that problem, or remembering something from the past, or daydreaming about the future. But your son is here and now. He is experiencing life. He still lives the world of female magic that he was born into, a world that is endlessly fascinating, where nothing is to be missed. He experiences the uniqueness of all things while, to you, the rock is just a rock and a worm is just a worm.
